Assignment Instructions

You are working as a worker in a construction company. Your company has received a project to construct single storey residential houses. Part of the project requires you to install flooring systems.
As per the job specifications, you are required to install each of the following flooring systems:
• a bearer and joist system on support to carry external walls and internal walls parallel to joists for a home or equivalent, not less than 30 square metres, including:
o balcony/deck fixings
o deep joists
• a tongue and groove fitted strip flooring surface, not less than 5 square metres
• an approved wet-area floor system, not less than 5 square metres
• a sheet platform system for a home or equivalent, not less than 10 square metres.

Job responsibilities:

As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:
• Work instructions must be read and interpreted, and a work sequence must be planned.
• Plan all work to be in accordance with laws and regulations, the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements, manufacturer's specifications, workplace requirements, drawings and specifications, and so on.
• Choose tools and equipment, inspect them for serviceability, and report any flaws.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be selected and used for each part of the task.
• Inspect the work site, locate services, assess hazards, and implement risk controls, such as necessary signage and barricades.
• Identify the materials needed for the task, calculate quantities, handle them safely, and prepare and position them for use.
• Position the support structure and stumps/piers in accordance with the set-out lines, drawings, and specifications.
• Install the support structure.
• Examine the support structure, posts, stumps, and piers to ensure they are level, plumb, and square.
• Bearer material should be marked and cut to length for joining over supports.
• Make plans to install a damp proof course and a termite shield where required by regulations.
• Locate and secure bearers, as well as check and adjust for square, in-line, and level.
• Attach waling plates for decks and balconies to the outside walls.
• Set out the location of the floor joists using the spacings specified in the drawings and specifications.
