Task Description:
The aim of this task is to enhance students’ learning through engagement in discussion of issues that impact on the lived experience of mental illness for consumers, carers and families. Through the Discussion Board discussions, students are exposed to the range of ideas and perspectives held by other students, have opportunity to reflect on their own attitudes and values within this context, and extend their understanding of how these views may impact on their role as a mental health practitioner.
Students are required to contribute to leading Discussion Board discussion on a course topic for one week.
The Course Convenor and/or Tutor will monitor and participate in the discussions, and moderate interaction where required.
Leading a discussion: Students will self-select a topic week, in which they will lead the discussion, by entering their name in a list on the course website. During the relevant week, each student who has nominated for that topic is required to contribute to leading the discussion board by posting a stimulus relevant to the topic or question/s for discussion by the broader student group.
A stimulus should provide some content relevant to the topic, such as:
a summary of relevant readings or research article;
a multimedia piece such as a web-based video or audio recording;
a relevant web-site or web-page
a personal account of individual experience that is related to the topic or research literature.
Stimuli may include material covered in the course content, but students are encouraged to also source other material to stimulate discussion.
It is recommended that students responsible for leading a discussion within a particular week liaise with each other and collaborate in managing and maintaining the discussion throughout the topic

week. However, each student’s contribution will be individually assessed through their identified postings on the discussion board.
Participation in other discussions:
In addition to leading the discussion in one week, students are encouraged to participate in the other discussion weeks. Although there are no marks provided for participation outside your leader week, discussions provide the opportunity to engage with the material at a deeper level and learn from each other. It is also helpful if students respond to your posts on the weeks that you lead!
Criteria & Marking:
A topic week is defined as extending from Sunday of the weekend before the topic week to Sunday of the weekend at the end of the topic week. Discussion Board contributions will be reviewed following the topic week and marks awarded.
It is expected that as Discussion Leader you will monitor the discussion tutorial on several occasions over the week and make multiple posts. You will be marked on:
1. Identification of the key issue(s) for the week and ability to pose suitable questions linked to literature. (6 marks)
2. Ability to respond appropriately (using netiquette guidelines) and in a timely manner to the posts of other students, and encourage discussion that is focused on the relevant topic for the week. (4 marks)
