Sample Engineering Homework — Judge the Quality First

We believe in full transparency. Below is an excerpt from a real undergraduate civil engineering assignment delivered by Projectitude — a structural analysis of a simply supported beam carrying combined dead and live loads. Read it and decide for yourself whether the quality matches what your university expects from a distinction-level student.

Client Brief: Structural analysis of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam, span 6.0 m, carrying a dead load of 15 kN/m (including self-weight) and a live load of 20 kN/m. Determine maximum bending moment, shear force, required flexural reinforcement and check deflection to BS 8110. Provide calculation sheet, reinforcement detailing sketch and written discussion. 1,500 words. Undergraduate, University of Leeds.

Excerpt: Ultimate Limit State Design & Reinforcement Calculation

The design ultimate load was calculated by combining the characteristic dead and live loads with partial safety factors from BS 8110-1:1997, giving a design load of w = 1.4(15) + 1.6(20) = 53.0 kN/m. For a simply supported beam of span L = 6.0 m, the maximum bending moment at midspan is M = wL²/8 = (53.0 × 6.0²)/8 = 238.5 kNm, and the maximum shear force at the supports is V = wL/2 = (53.0 × 6.0)/2 = 159.0 kN.

Adopting a beam section of b = 300 mm and effective depth d = 450 mm with concrete grade C30/37 and reinforcement grade 500 MPa, the design moment capacity ratio K = M/(bd²f_ck) = 238.5 × 10⁶/(300 × 450² × 30) = 0.131, which is less than the limiting value K' = 0.156. Since K < K', the section can be designed as singly reinforced, avoiding the need for compression reinforcement.

The lever arm factor z/d = 0.5 + √(0.25 − K/0.9) = 0.5 + √(0.25 − 0.146) = 0.823, giving z = 0.823 × 450 = 370 mm. The required area of tension reinforcement is A_s = M/(0.87 × f_y × z) = 238.5 × 10⁶/(0.87 × 500 × 370) = 1,481 mm². Provide 3 no. T25 bars (A_s,prov = 1,473 mm²) supplemented by 2 no. T16 bars (A_s,prov = 402 mm²), giving total A_s,prov = 1,875 mm², comfortably exceeding the required area with appropriate detailing margin.

Deflection was then checked using the span-to-effective-depth method from BS 8110 Clause 3.4.6, with basic ratio 20 for simply supported beams modified by a tension reinforcement factor of 1.32 (Mosley, Bungey & Hulse, 2012). The permissible span-to-depth ratio of 26.4 exceeds the actual ratio of 13.3, confirming that deflection is satisfactory without further detailed calculation.
